Why we don’t recommend the Orton-Gillingham Reading program for students who are behind in reading or who are dyslexic. Why is this?
Orton-Gillingham is the premiere reading program. When used to teach a child to read, the Orton-Gillingham Reading Program by far yields the best results. However, what about what happens when the Orton-Gillingham Reading program is used solely f
or reading remediation? When we use this program, we can get a child on or above grade level in reading. So why don’t we use it? We have yet to have a client come to us that has not received quality reading instruction. However, we do have numerous children who come to us who can’t read. We ha
e found that once the instruction surpasses the remediation, the child is once again behind in reading. This is because Orton-Gillingham does not address the underlining issues that are cause reading to be difficult.
We find much better long term success when we strengthen the areas of the brain that are causing reading to be hard. Once this is accomplished, a child is able to access his prior instruction. Suddenly reading is easier. This is a text message we received from a parent of a 4th-grade student in our program. When he came to us, he was three years behind in reading.
“I’m so sorry to bother you on a Saturday, but I just had to share! Around 6 last night, B started reading everything. He was playing a video game and for the first time started reading the titles/subtitles and messages. BIG WORDS! He was so excited he went around the house reading anything he could. Thank you for everything! You are such a blessing to our family. Equipping Minds is amazing! PRAISE THE LORD! Then, he started reading the label on the bottle of bbq at dinner. He said, “I’m on roll! Get me a Bible, I want to read from the Bible!” And he read the 23 Psalm for the first time! We are so excited and thankful! He is so happy….thank you so much!”
We hear stories like this one all of the time.
Orton-Gillingham Reading program does work. However, we have found that once instruction surpasses remediation, the student will once again fall behind. When we use Equipping Minds Educational Therapy, we strengthen the underlining areas of cognitive weakness. This allows the student to not only access prior learning but makes new learning easier.
Equipping Minds Holistic approach to educational therapy saves time and money. On average, a student’s cognitive areas of weakness are strengthened in 60 one hour sessions making future remediation unnecessary.
